This article is going to give you information on the best places to stay while visiting Paraguay, something I wish I had before visiting my first time. On my first trip to Paraguay to get my permanent residency, I knew almost nothing about the country including where to stay. I assumed like other Latin American countries, I would just get a room in the downtown area, so I could explore the city on foot. When I arrived at sunset in downtown Asuncion, I was in a bit of a cultural shock because all I saw was crumbling buildings and poverty. When I arrived at the Palmaroga Hotel, I was greeted by an armed guard wearing a bulletproof vest, who asked if I needed help with my luggage. At this point I started questioning myself and whether I had made a big mistake coming to Paraguay solo, and that maybe I had built up a false sense of confidence from previous travels in Latin America.
I walked into the Palmaroga Hotel and it was like stepping into a completely different reality in stark contrast to the poverty outside. The hotel was opulent with attention to detail only seen in five star hotels in the United States. I was greeted by multiple concierges and was notified that I was being upgraded to a two story suite and that I would still be paying the same price of $75 a night!! You can’t even stay at a Motel 6 in the U.S. for this price, I will detail the extremely low cost of living in Paraguay in another article. The sun had set and in no way shape or form did I feel comfortable leaving the hotel at night, not knowing anything about the city and being a solo traveler. The next morning I set out to explore the capital of Asuncion and quickly came to the realization I was staying in the wrong downtown and that there was a new downtown called Villa Morra, which had state of the art malls, restaurants & hotels. So don’t make the mistake I made, below I will be providing descriptions and pictures of hotels I have stayed at while in Paraguay.

Palmaroga Hotel
Price Estimate: $75-120
Location: Old Downtown
The Palmaroga hotel is a stunning hotel, which was recently completely remodeled and features all new state of the art amenities across the hotel. Rooms have flat screen TVs, high quality beds and great air conditioning. The main selling point of the Palmaroga hotel is the rooftop infinity pool, which overlooks the capital of Asuncion. The hotel service was some of the best service I had received in Paraguay. The hotel also includes a high quality all you can eat breakfast buffet, with fresh juices and a wide array of food. The major downside to this hotel is location as it is located in the old downtown Asuncion and not next to anything, so you will need about 15 minutes to get to the Villa Morra area where most of the shopping malls and restaurants are.

Factoria Hotel
Price Estimate: $120-240
Location: Villa Morra
The Factoria hotel in my opinion is the best hotel in Paraguay. I would simply describe it as majestic. The property is an old factory converted into a hotel, hence the name and the hotel drips with elegance and history. It almost feels like you are staying at a museum with all the pieces of history displayed throughout the hotel. The rooms are massive and have all the best a
amenities. The breakfast is unreal, there is no menu they just ask you how you like your eggs and bring you tray with everything imaginable. The hotel has all around great amenities including a large gym, pool and library for after dinner cocktails with friends. The hotel is centrally located in the Villa Morra neighborhood and you can walk to restaurants and shopping malls.

Tava Cerro Glamping
Price Estimate: $100-200 depends on the season
Location: San Bernardino, Paraguay
Tava Cerro glamping was a truly unique experience to connect with nature and have all the creature comforts of staying in a nice hotel. The hotel consists of about a dozen villas tucked away on a hill, in the weekend getaway town of San Bernardino, which is about an hour outside of Asuncion. There is a main check-in area with pool, dining area and service desk with employees staffed around the clock to meet any of your needs. One of the popular things to do is order room service and enjoy a nice romantic meal on your patio overlooking San Bernardino lake. The rooms come with flat screen TVs, heating, air conditioning and a lot of privacy. I was concerned about the heating and water pressure, but everything worked as if I was staying at a nice hotel in the city. Downside to the hotel, it’s off the beaten path, which means you need transportation to get to the San Bernardino town and there are essentially no Uber’s operating in San Bernardino. The hotel was able to call me a taxi, but they charged me a criminal amount so make sure you have a means of transportation if you decide to stay here.
