Staying Prepared for a Contested Election
Every election, we’re told it’s the most important in history, but this year, it genuinely is. This election will be a crucial test of America’s democracy and Constitution. In the last U.S. election, for the first time, results couldn’t be called on election night due to the time required to count mail-in ballots. The aftermath involved intense legal battles across swing states, creating chaos until former President Trump eventually conceded, allowing the country to step back from a potential crisis. Now, four years later, we’re on the brink of another heated election, and yet no meaningful amendments have been made to America’s voting process—an essential pillar of democracy.
While America seems to have limitless funding for foreign wars and the military, it still hasn’t modernized its voting system, which often lags behind global standards. As the world’s leading democracy, the U.S. should, by now, have adopted a secure, transparent voting method—like blockchain technology—that allows citizens to vote from their phones and verify their votes. Despite the absence of a pandemic, mail-in ballots remain a part of this election, which I believe could lead to further complications.
Personally, I just submitted my first mail-in ballot since I’ll be out of the country on election day, only to receive a notification that my vote wasn’t counted because my signature didn’t match the one on file from when I first registered at 18. No voter ID is required, yet my vote is invalid due to a signature mismatch? To me, this underscores a real disconnect in a voting process that’s so vital to what’s at stake this election. The stakes are incredibly high, yet our voting infrastructure and policies haven’t kept pace.
Throughout history, many nations that experienced disputed elections ultimately faced internal conflict or even civil war. Hopefully, the U.S. won’t follow that path and instead sees a decisive outcome, as I’m not sure our current system—or the country itself—could handle a drawn-out, contested election. If that happens, we could see civil unrest fueled by a polarized media that intensifies divisions.
As we approach election week, it’s wise to stay vigilant. The comfort of normalcy bias often stops people from preparing for challenging scenarios. Instead, take some time now to consider proactive steps: research Bitcoin, gold, or even securing residency abroad. Planning for these options can provide a safety net in uncertain times.
