Paraguay is by far the cheapest country I have visited in Latin America. Coming from one of the most expensive cities in the United States, the prices and affordability were shocking. The local currency is called the Guarani, and it has a very favorable exchange rate of 1 dollar to 7313 guaranies! The largest Guarani bill is a 100k note, which is the equivalent of $13.67. The largest bill isn't over 20 dollars! So, if you are going with dollars and are used to U.S. pricing, you are going to feel rich. When I'm visiting Paraguay, I pretty much go out to eat for every meal and spend the equivalent of American fast-food prices to eat at nice restaurants. Although the Paraguayan Guarani has very high denominations, the currency itself is very stable and is one of the most stable currencies in Latin America. Paraguay is experiencing single-digit inflation, which is impressive considering its neighbor, Argentina, is over 120%.
How to exchange dollars for Guarani:
When in Paraguay, I highly suggest exchanging your currency at legitimate "Cambio" exchange houses with store fronts. Do not exchange currency with men on the streets offering a better rate, as they will rip you off since most foreigners are not familiar with the currency. Unfortunately, this happened to me on one of my first visits to Paraguay. I was in the old downtown area where many of the currency street dealers work, and the exchange houses were closed due to a holiday. I was forced to use a street dealer and got ripped off. If it's your first time visiting Paraguay, I suggest using the currency exchange store located in Paseo Galeria Mall. It won't offer the best rate, but it will be safe and convenient. If you need to exchange Bitcoin for cash, I actually own the only ATM in Paraguay that does this, and I can set you up with a good rate.
