Crime in every American city is increasing by any statistic you measure. Every week it seems there is a new mass shooting or mass looting event taking place, so much so that it has been normalized and is almost non news now. This past week's crime spree hit close to home, the Nordstrom's I frequent was looted by over 30 masked individuals in broad daylight. The perpetrators made off with over $300k worth of merchandise, in just under ten minutes with no individuals having been arrested. On top of this, the mass shooting that took place this week at Cook’s Corner Bar, was just minutes away from me and an establishment my friends and family frequent. Now whenever you go out in America, you need to be conscious of this, because these are no longer isolated events.
What is going on in America?
There are many factors contributing to the increase in crime, including inflation, poverty, but the main one I believe is culture. I believe America is in the beginning phases of a culture shift or what might turn into a cultural revolution, where many of the values we hold dear today, may not be valued in the future. When you see things like Californian politicians decriminalizing retail theft under $2,000, you can get a sense of where this heading. The scary thing is that times are good right now, the stock market and real estate are up, the job market is relatively good, what are things going to look like when the ‘everything’ bubble pops? I can tell you it will not be as civilized as the 2009 crash, the country has become far more divided and the problems a lot larger.
When I traveled abroad and visited some of the poorest countries in Latin America, I was actually surprised at how comfortable I felt in certain places, where I thought it would be the wild west. I once had a mixup on a trip and ended up in Santa Cruz, Bolivia for the first time and by myself, I knew nothing about Bolivia other than it was the poorest country in Latin America. I was mentally preparing for myself to survive a crime ridden city with people out to get me, but just the opposite occurred in Bolivia. I walked all over downtown Santa Cruz and encountered nothing but friendly people, I wasn’t even heckled to buy anything, which surprised me because I am the epitome of a gringo standing at 6’ 6” tall. How could this be so? Just prior to my trip to South America I had gone to downtown Los Angeles to grab coffee with friends and it was an absolute war zone, with countless homeless individuals, open drug use and people screaming in my face as I crossed the street. While on this trip in Latin America I came to the revelation that not all crime is economic based crime but that culture plays a large contributory factor.
America is in cultural decline across the board and this is becoming obvious to anyone paying attention. The U.S. population has enjoyed the wealth that comes with controlling the World’s reserve currency and has become spoiled over time living under the King Dollar. This is what alarms me is that America has become so entitled that any substantial drop in the standard of living will not be handled very well by the American population. When this financial reckoning occurs you will see an outburst of violence similar to what happened during the Covid-19 riots, which for the first time saw riots break out across the country. No one knows when this will happen or how much further the government can kick the can down the road, but I do know when it ends you will want to be somewhere outside of the cities and with a good culture.
